Favourite films
My numero uno is Amadeus and always will be because it holds a special place in my heart. I have a penchant for making "Top (insert number that's an interval of five)", but that changes about 10 times each year, so here is a rundown of films that were my "top films" around January 2009. I highly recommend each film.
Vivre sa vie: film en douze tableaux (My Life to Live)
Some Like It Hot
Die Bergkatze
Wait Until Dark
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain
A League of their Own
Ninotchka
Don't Bother to Knock
Jules et Jim
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
'IT' (1927)
The Women (1939; the 2008 remake was enjoyable in its own way as well)
Double Indemnity
Paris, je'taime
Münchhausen (1943)
Valmont
Schatten - Eine nächtliche Halluzination
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso
Die freudlose Gasse (The Joyless Street)

More information
I grew up watching films with Audrey Hepburn and Robert Redford, but eventually ended up watching films from Hollywood's Golden Age during 10th or 11th grade due to my mom. It's been mostly my mom that has shaped my tastes, especially in film and music. It's because I watched Amadeus numerous times as a child that it holds a special place in my heart. Although my mom has introduced me to some directors/films, such as films by Jean Renoir and Ingmar Bergman, I ventured out a bit as well, thus found nouvelle vague films and early German films that I eventually became in love with. Some people might label me as pretentious or some say that I'm just trying to be "trendy" and "hip" because I watch old films, but truthfully, I am genuinely interested and enjoy watching them. I have a soft spot for comedies, particularly screwball and romantic. Also, I enjoy watching chick flicks!
Although I am a film studies minor (art history is my major), I actually find art and film analysis and criticism to be all a joke. I continuously have a love/hate relationship with art/film, thus sometimes I'm really critical with films and even start analyzing (oh the effects of taking film classes!) Anyway, I'm just someone who likes to have a good time! Yes, there is nothing inherent about film that makes it a storytelling device, but I definitely enjoy a good plot. Beautiful cinematography is beautiful, but I watch films to have a good time, not to watch a plot be dragged out for an hour and a half *ahemthelastlaughahem*. To make myself feel better, I tell myself that Billy Wilder thought the same. Now that I think of it, I sometimes do like "avant-garde" films that don't have plots. I guess I don't make much sense, but let's say that for the most part, I'M INTERESTED IN THE STORY.
I have a tendency to care about "eye candy" (attractive people) and usually make a note of it. It is somewhat irrelevant in serious discussions, but to me, eye candy is fun to be on the look out for! Most people do not agree with my tastes, but I am absolutely crazy about Gustav von Wangenheim, Marlene Dietrich, and Gösta Ekman.
One more thing! Billy Wilder and Ernst Lubitsch are my favourite directors.
